The Monkey Island sharks

                                       The Monkey Island sharks

                                                  Lucheng Middle School   Zhai Xiujuan

Teaching content:

Reading passage: the monkey island sharks (Junior students)

Teaching aims:

1.      To make the students interested in the plot of the story and get the main idea of the passage by reading and guessing the meaning in situations or context.

2.      To identify specific details by answering questions and to guess the ending of the story by pictures and questions.

3.      To understand and recognize the present participle to restrict the nouns

4.      To grasp the new words and phrases.

Teaching objectives:

1.      Ability objectives: To develop the students’ reading ability by guessing and their imagination.

2.      Moral objectives: To enable the students to know the importance of the safety when they are out in their real life.

Teaching emphasis and difficulties:

1.      Language functions and focus:

a.       Some new words and phrases. Such as: rent a boat, push a boat into, spray water on, take a deep breath, etc.

b.      Recognize the present participle and its usage. such as

the woman standing near the boat.

He sprayed the water on everyone standing near the boat

Another man getting out of the boat said….

The people standing on the shore.

2.      Get the main idea and easily know something about the plot of the story: such as the origin, the climax and the ending.

Teaching procedure:

Step 1. Pre-reading:(8 minutes)

1. Lead –in: Asking questions: According to the title, can you guess what animals will appear in the story? Then teach some of the new words

(I arrange the part because I want to arouse the students’ interest in the story. Maybe they will not mention the animal called a dolphin; they have no ideas about what the relationship between the dolphin and the shark)

2        Show them the pictures about the Monkey Island, sharks, boats, go water skiing, etc.

Teacher’s activities: The teacher shows the pictures and explains something to them.

Students’ activities: They listen and understand what the teacher said and read after the teacher carefully and correctly.

(When the students learn the words by looking at the pictures, maybe they can learn the words easily, the teaching approach is called situational teaching)

Step 2 While-reading

1.      Listening: (6 minutes) I decide to divide the passage into three parts. First, listen to the context from the beginning to “I don’t worry about the sharks”. Second, from “Jim and his friend pushed the boat” to “suddenly, a brown fin moved through the water towards Jim”. Third, listen to the left part.

( I design this part because I want the students to know what the story is about, but I don’t want to tell them the result so that they will show great interest in the ending of the story. So I can activate their interest and curiosity in guessing by their imagination)

A) Teacher’s activities: The teacher plays the tape and stops it when it is necessary and show the questions to them.

a) Listen to the first part for getting the answer to the questions:

Did the other persons agree to go water skiing? Why?

b) Listen to the second part for getting the answer to the questions:

Did Jim go water skiing with his friends?

What happened then?

B)     Students’ activities: The students listen to the tape carefully and find out the answers to the questions.

.2. Speaking:(4)minutes) Ask the students to guess what would happen to Jim? I plan some choices for them:

a)      Jim was eaten by the shark(      )

b)      Jim was saved by his friends and other people.(     )

c)      Jim was missing, no one knows where he is   (     )

d)      Your imagination.               (      )

( I design this part because I want them to talk with his friends or the members around them to discuss or guess what would happen as I think they might have different ideas so that they can use something in the text to intensify the new words and phrases. Of course I will not let them read the left of the story)

Teacher’s activities: Present the four choices and leave some minutes to discuss what would happen to Jim and the teacher should attend the activity to know what the students think of the ending of the story

Students’ activities: They can discuss with their partners to infer what happened to Jim. Of course, they should find out the reasons for their choice.

3. Reading: (10 minutes)

Reading for the first time:(To get the general meaning)

Teacher’s activities: Ask the students to read the passage carefully and tell us the following statements “T” or “F”

a)      They would like to try water skiing very much.

b)      Three people said that they saw a shark in the water.

c)      Jim drove the boat and tried water skiing with his two friends.

Students’ activities: Read the passage carefully and quickly to find out if the statements are “T” or “F”. They can discuss with their partners.

Reading for the second time: ( To get some specific details)

Teacher’s activities: Ask them to read it again and answer the following questions:

a)      Which woman said “Don’t go water skiing near Monkey Island ”?

b)      Which man said “I’m sure we just saw a shark in the water a few minutes ago”?

c)      He drove very fast and sprayed water on someone, didn’t he? And who were they?

Students’ activities: They read carefully and find out the answers to the questions using the present participle. Then they read the answers together.

Step 3. Production (5 minutes) (Read the end of the story to find out whose guessing idea is right or reasonable)

Teacher’s activities: Show the students a picture of a dolphin, then ask them why here a dolphin is shown and what the relationship between the dolphin and the ending of the story is)

Possible answers:1. The animal is a dolphin not a shark 2.the dolphin saved Jim because it is stronger than a monkey in the water.

Students’ activities: The students read the passage carefully and find out the final and answer the question: Is there a real shark in the story?

(I arrange the part because I haven’t told them the result of the story, they also wanted to know what happened to Jim and I show them a picture of dolphin to arouse their curiosity again and to enable them to have the ability of imagination)

Step 4. Extension activity:(12 minutes)

First: Think about the following questions:( 6 minutes)

1.      What do you think of Jim?

2.      What would happen if there was a real shark in the bay?

3.      What should we do when we are on a visit in the future?

( The three questions are connected with their true life, so I hope they can have the consciousness of the safety because safety is the first in the life)

Second: Fill in the blanks to complete the diary written by Jim according to the story.(6 minutes)        An unforgettable day

I went water skiing with my friends. At first we would like to try water skiing, but some persons said that they saw the shark in the water. They warned us not to go water skiing. But I still wanted to have a try to show my friends how well I could water ski. At last when I was water skiing, suddenly a brown fin appeared. I thought it was a shark so I was too frightened to go on and I shouted for help. When I got back, I found it was a dolphin not a shark. I think I was a lucky boy. And from now on, I will not do that kind of thing.

Step 5. Exercises:

1. Read another story called “Monkey Island Great Escape”

2.      Copy down some important phrases

(I prepare this kind of homework for them because the story is similar with the passage, they can understand and consolidate the passage by using the new words and phrases in the text.)
